Source of the Nile

The southernmost source of the Nile, marked by a pyramid.

Rutovu, Bururi, Burundi

Near Rutovu, a thin stream of water emerges from the slope of Mount Gikizi and is recognized as the southernmost source of the Nile. The explorer Burkhart Waldecker is credited with identifying it in 1934, and a small pyramid marks the spot. Several sources of the Nile are claimed, but this one has a story all of its own.
